OYO changes policy in Meerut, no check-ins for unmarried couples.

NEW DELHI: OYO, a popular Indian hotel chain, has introduced a new rule allowing partner hotels to refuse check-ins to unmarried couples.

This policy, starting in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, will apply immediately and aims to respect "local social sensibilities." Under the new guidelines, all couples must show valid proof of their relationship during check-in, even for online bookings. Hotels can use their discretion to deny bookings for unmarried couples based on local feedback, according to a report by PTI.

OYO explained that the decision was influenced by feedback from local groups in Meerut and requests from residents in other cities to restrict hotel stays for unmarried couples.

"OYO is dedicated to safe and responsible hospitality. While we respect individual freedoms, we also aim to work with local authorities and community groups in the areas we serve," said Pawas Sharma, OYO’s Region Head for North India. The company also plans to review the policy regularly to assess its impact.

This change is part of OYO’s effort to improve its image as a family-friendly and safe hospitality brand for all types of travelers, including students, businesspeople, solo travelers, and families. The company also hopes to encourage longer stays and increase customer loyalty through this initiative.

In addition, OYO has launched nationwide programs, such as seminars with police and hotel partners on safe hospitality practices, blacklisting hotels involved in inappropriate activities, and taking action against unauthorized hotels using the OYO name.
